I'm curious. Is the (RED) coffee fair trade certified? And, if not, what guarantee is there that the coffee was ethically produced, with the farmers in Africa getting paid fair wages?
Thanks,
John
John,
This is a great question. We reached out to our Starbucks partner and they had this to say: The (RED) coffee that is available in Starbucks is a blend of East African coffees, but is not certified Fair Trade. Unfortunately, there is a limited supply of African coffee that is Fair Trade certified. Just last month Starbucks and Fair Trade both went to Rwanda to expand on their collaboration to incorporate more farmers into the program and increase their quality and livelihood’s. Starbucks has invested in building a permanent local team and regional office in Kigali in order to be able to achieve this and other ethical sourcing goals.
By teaming with (PRODUCT)RED on this project, Starbucks will donate $1 U.S. from the sale of each one pound bag of (STARBUCKS)RED whole bean coffee purchased at a participating U.S. and Canada Starbucks store to the Global Fund. The money is intended to benefit children and adults living with HIV, helping save lives in Africa, a key coffee growing region for the company. Starbucks is committed to buying the serving the best coffee possible and has details available online for how that money is traced back to the people who produce coffee. This is so great to see. I have to say, I didn't really support Starbucks before reading this. I felt they were over priced and didn't really give back enough compared to how much they bring in and charge. I am thrilled to see them take part in such an amazing cause. If I go to Starbucks in the future, I will be spending my money on their Red products.
