Investing In Girls

By Tamsin Smith

At AIDS 2008, the world's largest HIV forum in Mexico City that commenced this weekend, the need for interventions specifically designed to empower girls was clear: increasingly, the face of AIDS in Africa is young and female.

UNAIDS figures from Swaziland are a good snapshot: HIV prevalence among girls 15-24 is over 20 percent; among boys it's just over 5 percent.

The Global Fund (RED) grants in Rwanda, Ghana, Swaziland and Lesotho emphasize programs serving women and children. And more needs to be done to give greater attention to females of different ages and circumstances (married v. unmarried, living in urban v. rural areas).

Lisa MacCallum, Managing Director of Nike Foundation, showed a video called "The Girl Effect" that we loved. The gist of the video is that by valuing and investing in girls they can make a better life for themselves, their families and improve society as a whole.

Watch the video:

So far, the incredible scale up of Global Fund resources from public and private sector donors, including (RED) consumers, coupled with newly-reauthorized PEPFAR investments, direct action by affected countries, and partnerships driven by civil society are all driving in the right direction. We just need to step on the gas.

This is a wonderful video, I am so glad that I came across it! It truly places in perspective the privilege most girls enjoy in the United States every day, but also emphasizes the need to do so much more for girls living all over the world. Thanks for posting this.

Hello, i'm from China and very interested in (PRODUCT)RED. I'd like to know how you guys manage to cover various expenses of (RED) itself, as u claimed that no overhead is taken from these donations. So i wonder where does the money covering your daily expenses come from. Thanks you!

What a fantastic, yet simple video clip. I stumbled across this site because I was searching on RED... I'm the CEO of RedBalloon
But the message was so clear I need to forward it to others.

Thanks for the inspiration!

in response to Hongye: the (RED) organization is financed through licensing fees paid by partners. The portion of profit generated to fight AIDS in Afica when a consumer purchases a (RED) product goes directly to the Global Fund. The Global Fund does not access an overhead charge in dispensing the funds so 100 percent of the value created by (RED) consumer action goes to impact families in Africa.

Hi folks, Excuse me here because I know this is somewhat off topic, but -- there is only one BabyGap in the whole pacific NW that supposedly carries (RED) items for babies. I drove there today to get a onesie or some other item, only to find out the store doesn't carry (RED) items at all anymore! "Sorry" they said. BabyGap (RED) items aren't available online. How are consumers supposed to buy things if stores don't carry them? Has AIDS gone away and I didn't get the memo? I'm disappointed.

in response to anyonymous:
Unfortunately our Gap partner no longer carries (PRODUCT)RED for babies or children. We are hopeful that in the future it will return. For current Gap (PRODUCT)RED offering please visit http://www.joinred.com/Shop/shop_gap.aspx or www.gap.com/red. Product offering does vary from store to store, our apologies for your inconvenience.

Well this is a nice Blog on most important facts. I am happy to read this. But I am looking more and more info. Please add some thing more. I shall link from my blogs to this blog to day itself.
Last week I have found a nice informative guide on HIV from following URL http://www.helpcure.com/hiv/
This guide says - How To Cure HIV Through herbal medicines and Holistic Treatment. Guide claims that HIV viruses can't be killed but they can be ousted out of the body cells using bio magnetic repulsion or something written. I dreamt of a HIV free world after reading this guide.
Hope to read more from you people soon.
Wish you all a nice and fantastic Day for you
