All photos by Adele Sulcas / The Global Fund
Adele from The Global Fund sent us her quarterly report on (RED) last week, with details on grants sent to Rwanda and Swaziland. What struck me the most weren't numbers, however – it was a short story that Adele told about a little girl named Denyse.
On May 18, 2006, when Bono and a number of (RED) partners visited the pediatric ward of the central hospital in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, we met an 8-year-old girl named Denyse, who was a patient in the ward. At the time, Denyse was a tiny, inert, skeletal figure, lying motionless and silent in a bed while her distraught father, himself HIV-positive, looked on with desperation.
At the end of August, we returned to Kigali and met Denyse and her father again. This time, Denyse, a sprightly, smiling child neatly turned out in her school uniform, skipped along the pavement and ran towards us to say hello. Denyse began antiretroviral therapy, which keeps the virus that causes AIDS under control and helps people live normal lives, soon after we met her in May.
The result: a healthy, happy child getting on with school and being a normal little girl. This is what (RED) is helping Rwandans and Swazis to do – to return to health and to get on with life.
I asked Adele for some photos to show you all. Doesn’t she have the cutest smile?

first time here... great blog... keep on world needs humans...
the weird flatlander....
What a beautiful and inspirational story! There are so many atrocities and rampant illness/starvation cases in that part of the world it's nice to read about hope and some people getting a chance at life. Cheers!
First time here. Does Amex and the other end users give a portion of profits etc?
The concept sounds great
A very moving post :)
Keep it up guys!

beautiful~
IT MAGNIFIES WORK THAT MAKES, continue with its humanitarian work. good luck.
I am so happy and proud of being part of something so big, and to be able to see the results here on this blog.
I hope more people can join the campaign and help more of our brothers in Africa.
These pictures brought tears to my eyes, I am sure she is not the only child and only person that has a better life just because of everything that (RED) is doing and letting us be part of it.
God bless you all! God bless Denyse and her family.
wow this is an amazing. I hope to hear/see more like it in the future. Thank you!
this Lazarus effect is a miracle to behold everytime. these are the next generation who will teach their children how the west was there for them when they needed us. so good to see her healthy and the family so well. thank you for your work with them, and i thank God for The Global Fund. it's putting feet to what we believe in, that's what it's all about.
stay close,
sammi
It's stories like these that this project real! Keep sharing!!!
Also, for anyone who thinks that it is frustrating that our consumeristic tendencies are the only way in which we can take part in the fight against aids, check out this link for an idea called project (Red)emption:

Thanks so very much, bn, for this TRULY INSPIRATIONAL story of Denyse and her family!
It will be getting stories just like this out to the general public and media that will go a long way in convincing others that the Global Fund DOES WORK and the RED is an EXCELLENT way to build up the Global Fund's coffer of available monies to fight AIDS and SAVE LIVES!
I will be using this story in outreach activities that y'all already know that are startingin my area.
PLEASE continue to share with us these stories of Hope and Inspiration.
Take very good care of yourselves, RED.
Blessings will always surround you.
FOREVER RED, debbie
Photos are a powerful thing. Speaking of which there's a discussion right now on Zootopia at u2.com about Bono's book "A String of Pearls" that was a collection of photos he took in Ethiopia. Someone suggested that since it is out of print he should consisder reprinting it as a Product(RED) or if that is not possible maybe another book of his photos including more recent pictures if he has some. Maybe one of you could put a bug in his ear about this?
Dana

Very, very, good!
Actually, the person who started that thread at U2.com about "A String of Pearls" possibly being reissued to benefit RED was me. (smile)
My suggestion could be implemented several ways - the book of photographs
that Bono snapped (while volunteering in an refugee camp in Ethiopia during the famine of the mid-1980s) could be updated with some of the more recent pics of his travels to Africa.
A book such as this would be an instant big seller and the profits could easily be earmarked for RED.
This could lead to a series of best selling books that could branded as RED.
Just a thought that I came up with in Zootopia.
I thank Dana for mentioning it here.
LOVE AND PEACE. HOPE AND JOY. MERCY AND GRACE.

Wow, very touching. It's great that the RED movement has garnered enough steam and attention to attract corporations like Apple, Gap, and Motorola's alliance.

Wow.It's beautiful.I was going through a random list of blogs and found this one. I had heard about the new red i pod but i did not know about this organization. My friend and i support the fight against breast cancer so now that we know about this we will probably tell the rest of our friends about it. We are only in middle school but we can still help

Beautiful blog and beautiful story. The net needs more good deeds and stuff about them. Keep it up - I am happy to see there are people out there who care about others regardless of race or skin color - this is the way it should be.

wow, thats awesome!
keep up the great work!
First time here and am glad to fine this. Nice work.
wow this blog live in my own.
The (red) products are great, and for such a great cause. Where can I find myself a (red)head shirt? It would be perfect for myself and my son! Thanks!
How does it help anyone if I buy a red razorphone? Or a red t-shirt? Seriously.
It's when we see the actual faces behind the bigger cause that we really understand how much power we actually have.
We have been told for so long that we are alone in a huge world and that we can't do anything by ourselves - well, everytime I purchase something now, I make sure it's a RED product. I can sure do that on my own!
Thank you so much for giving us this power and these beautiful stories...I'll be thinking of lots of little girls and boys like Denyse when I buy all my (RED) Xmas gifts! Dx
Great follow-up on this beautiful child. That's what's great about this campaign. Everyone can get personally involved by interacting with the red products and, now, by seeing the difference our purchases can make.

I am so thrilled with my Converse shoes!!! They came and they fit perfectly! They will be a reminder to continue to pray and support those who can't even afford medicine, much less shoes. As I'm able, I will try to do more whether it's buying or just donating. This is a great cause and seeing the pictures reminds me of my trip to Guatemala to see my sponsored child through Compassion. You see your money in action and know that it is doing exactly what the organization says it will do. I trust this is the same. Thanks for the opportunity to share and see how RED benefits others.
My daughter and I went shopping for RED products the first day and we had the best time! We're beig believers in the ONE campaign and RED. God bless Denyse and her gorgeous family! I hope to see many more smiling, healthy faces in the future as a result of RED!
Let's keep it up!
Peace and love,
Michele
this is a Great story and I hope to see many more like this. It's a pleasure to be part of something like this. I hope more people get involved.
Blessed, JAH WORKS ! There is nothing but love in this child's smile. Bless the "RED" movement ! Peace.
I love the Product Red idea, but Bono, when can we get it in Ireland? I have been asking O2 when they will have the Motorola Red phone and they say they have no plans to introduce it... Please make them change their minds, I'm sure I'm not the only person in Ireland who wants to get involved!
This is an awesome project...can't wait to get my project red nano...!!!
To whom it may concern... I'm really interested in the (red) project and I'm curious to know about the RED products in Canada, because I've gone into stores and haven't seen anything. I think this is a wonderful cause and I want to make sure Canada is doing as much as it can to be part of it.
Sincerely, Amanda.
It is a very solidary reason to buy my red ipod. With every grain of sand we can fill hearts and give hopes to children as denise.Nice work ¡¡¡ Aydee Garnica.
