2:48am Friday night/Saturday morning
It's been quite a day! Has anybody ever asked, "Do you feel any different?" on your birthday or other significant life event? And you think to yourself, "What kind of question is that!? Why would I feel different?!" And sometimes you accidentally say that out loud. . .
Well, today nobody asked, but I DID feel different. When I woke up from the 2-hour nap that comprised the entirety of my “good night's sleep,” it felt as if I'd woken in a different world – paradoxically, calm and excited. I heard news that the Oprah taping the day before was amazing, received a phone call from Bobby about the important encounter with President Bush at the airport (see previous post (RED) Force One), readied our servers for the influx of launch-day web traffic, sent newsletters announcing the U.S. launch of (RED) to everyone on our mailing list, and exceeded my tolerance for caffeine many times over – things were in order. News of our launch and our new partner, Apple, was hitting the East Coast when I awoke at 4:30 this morning and blog postings were already circulating like wildfire.
I breezed through L.A. traffic – ok, perhaps the world really did change overnight – arrived at the (RED) offices, and began monitoring our servers and responding to the feedback and inquiries already received. Meighen and Amy returned from Chicago and filled us in on the events (and snow) of the previous day. We spent some time creating our (RED) AIM WeeMees, dressing them in and accessorizing them with (PRODUCT)RED items. At 2:30pm we packed up our laptops and headed to a restaurant to watch Oprah together. The restaurant was kind enough to turn off the music, turn up the TVs and tune all 3 sets to Oprah. Some of our friends joined us for the impromptu viewing party – our very patient friends who accept our phone calls at odd hours during the day and night, some of whom haven’t seen us in weeks.
I’ve been working on (RED) since December, 2005. For one hour, watching Oprah, I had goosebumps. Watching the show, surrounded by friends and my colleagues who have become more than just (RED) family – they’re family. During a commercial break, Alan leaned over to me and said, “I remember when it was just… well, Bobby. And then you and Tamsin came along, and we started looking for offices, and now – it’s here!” The irony, of course, is that we’re still looking for offices! The other irony is that while we were all sending Bobby, Sheila, Tamsin and Colin text messages, telling them how wonderful the show turned out, they hadn’t yet seen it. They were still in New York, making the rounds.
When the show ended, we all caravanned over to The Grove so we could shop (RED). Friday afternoon L.A. traffic – not such a breeze. Nonetheless, we arrived at Gap one hour after the Oprah broadcast ended. The windows were (RED) and there was a beautiful fixture – a (RED) boutique – with all the products. We’ve been looking at pictures and had seen samples, but this was the first time we’ve been able to hold and buy the items we’ve been wanting for so long. Friends were calling asking me to buy them shirts and hoodies. And then, it got louder in the store and through the muffled sound (as if underwater) you began to hear:
Gap employees telling customers about (RED); customers replying, “I already know – I just finished watching Oprah.”; “Do you have more medium shirts?”; “I want those Converse!”; “Everybody is getting (RED) for Christmas.”; “Oh no, they’re out of. . . ”; "Which one should I get?"; "Buy them both!" And then Bich Ngoc, who couldn’t even make it from the parking lot to Gap without first ducking into Apple to buy the (RED) Nano, proudly holding up her latest purchase -- "Look at this!" There was a brief moment of silence as Meighen nearly knocked over the larger-than-life Jennifer Garner display with her stroller. Jennifer Garner looks strong -- definitely don't want to take on a 12-foot version of her!
It was one of the most inspi(red) moments I’ve ever experienced. It was wonderful to meet everyone who was shopping (RED) and the enthusiastic Gap employees who have been looking forward to this day almost as long as we have.
Next, we headed to Apple and bought (RED) Nanos. Although she was eager to get to dinner, we coerced Bich Ngoc back into the Apple store while we bought our Nanos. “But I already got mine,” she said. “Well, come watch us buy ours!” That’s what happens when you’re family…
I went to see my friend’s band play at The Viper Room and then headed home. By the time I got here, there were emails, blog comments, and MySpace messages from people around the country saying that Gap and Gap.com/RED were already sold out of some of the items they wanted. “I’m so upset and yet, so happy!” Alessandra’s note exclaimed. We’ve been corresponding with Alessandra for several months. She heard about (RED) when we launched in the U.K. and has been anxiously awaiting products in the U.S. ever since. So it’s with a great deal of appreciation I reply: if you can just wait a little longer, I know our partners are working hard to replenish products as they run out. Call stores, sign up for their mailing lists, sign up for our mailing list, design your own pair of (RED) shoes at Converseone.com and thank you!
It rained tonight. This is Los Angeles. It’s not supposed to rain in L.A. Something IS different about this day. 15 minutes later it stopped. Equilibrium restored. Perhaps the world wasn't different this morning – it just got easier for each of us to make a difference.

I'm glad to see (RED) finally launched in the US. I just wish I'd known that the products would be in Canada at the same time. I just bought a phone last month. I would have waited if I'd known they'd be available here so soon. Oh well, there's always next time!
Craaayzeh! Hope you are getting the sleep you deserved now that the weekend is here! Thanks for the post. Well said! :)
Colette! I loved this post. I don't work for RED, but I feel like part of the TEAM (RED), just like some of our friends that are here since the very begining, sending posts, etc.
It was very emotional for me watching Oprah, feeling that thing were really happening and I was hoping that the Gap PRODUCT(RED) were going to be sold out in the first day. And as I told u before, I am happy, because that I know...we know that that means that people in Africa will get their medicines, their hope reinstated that their lives will be longer and happier.
I will get my first PRODUCTS(RED) tomorrow and can't wait for it. And as soon as I get it, I will take pictures and post on my blog and send to all of my friends. I also changed my AIM buddy icon, after I read your post...it looks so cute!
I already decided, that whatever present I give from now on, it will be only PRODUCT(RED)!
Keep up the amazing job! You all rock!
Love,
Ale
Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing. Before you go to bed, remember that you are making a difference. Yes, you are creating life by saving it.
there's been a certain intoxication that has accompanied this launch. how the show brought out tenderness and joy and satisfaction with us all, seeing the joy and fun that bono and bobby were having, hearing of sellouts even here in seattle already. when i walked into our main store in seattle today, a cluster of about 8 or 10 manichins displayed most all of the items GAP offered in a grouping in the middle of the entraceway, surrounded for a bit by a crowd who came in. and peeling back a neckline and seeing made in Lethoso, my eyes couldn't help but well up. i stepped back and dave took some pics. and we went upstairs into the store and was amazed at the massive display. dave took some more pics, the manager came over and said "we don't allow photos in the store, but when i saw your ONE shirt and bag (whew) we decided to let you, knowing you had a reason." i had just come from a RESULTS meeting downtown and we wear our campaign's shirts to the meetings representing who we come on behalf of. i will upload pics after i finish the roll at the STANDUP for Poverty near the space needle tomorrow, put on disk, and send to you.
thank you. notice how your venture has given many of us this deep-seeded joy? and a sense of family and teamwork. and belonging. and bottom line, punk capitalism, this creative commerce . . . it's for our kids. measurable, sustainable care for our kids. by purchasing the hottest items in the states today, The Global Fund is fattened, intentionally or not, it's fattened. yes, thank you. love and appreciate you all deeply.
stay close,
sammi f(red)enburg =)
I just found out about (RED) very recently, (I saw some ads for it in this months O magazine), and then i of course saw the Oprah show on Friday.
I was amazed by what (RED) is trying to accomplish and the way they are going about it. I was floored thinking about how ingenious and yet simple it all was. You buy the things you're already going to buy, but with the added satisfaction that you are also helping to save lives and futures.
I teared up watching the Oprah show and thinking about how much (RED) will help those who need it. My mom, sister and I will most definitely be getting various PRODUCT (RED) things soon, and I have just added a banner to my blogger page.
I thank you and all involved for letting me feel like I am a part of something important and grand, but more importantly for doing your part to make the place we live in better, not just for us, but for everyone.
Great job for all RED employees, Prefect product for a really good cause.
Thank you!
I already went shopping and plan on getting all the RED products. This is an excellent idea and I love that I can do my part- even in a fun way!
I am inspi(red). I just learned about(RED) and I am amazed. It's simple and brilliant.
However, I haven't found any products for children. I have three of my own (ages 2, 4 and 5), and as soon as I saw those GAP
T-shirts, I wanted to get them each one. They already have a general understanding about poverty, homelessness and illness. They also have performed small acts of charity. It makes them feel special and important, and it teaches them at the same time. I'm sure there are many other children (and parents) out there who would love to go (RED).
That said, are there any plans for a children's line? My husband and I joked about Tees that read
Ti(red), Bo(red) and Perspi(red). Not exactally inspirational but you get the point. We need some kids' wear!
Again, I must stress what a phenomenal idea this is. Truly, fantastic.
I am so happy to be apart of RED, just by purchasing items. I live faraway from a Gap or any other stores, so after Oprah aired, I went right on Gap.com and could only order a few items, because they were all sold out! How fantastic! I will keep checking back to order the inspired t-shirt...God bless RED and Africa!
I second the idea of a children's line. I have grand-nieces and grand-nephews to shop for.
Other items on my (RED) wishlist:
(RED) music. Singles by various artists available for download. Or compilation CDs/downloads like the old "Red Hot & _____" collections for AIDS.
(RED) pet products: collars/leashes, dishes, beds, carriers, toys, all natural treats. Anything for the pampe(red) pet.
(RED) coffee: fair trade, organic, caf. and water decaf. Beans and ground. Starbucks?
(RED) jewelry & accessories: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, toe rings, body jewels, hair clips/ties.
(RED) makeup/body products: Body Shop? M.A.C.?
(RED) children's books. A book for each African country to teach other children around the world about the lives of African children.
glad to see that most of the GAP products are affordable for the average consumer... even the cell phone from what i see is a decent price. Nice that its being pitched to the middle class - we're the ones who will keep this RED going... and nice too that the manager of my local GAP said that GAP had a 5 yr committment to RED.
WoW! Like so many others, after watching Oprah I ran out to the closest Gap to get all (RED)ed up. The store was flooded with people within 15 minutes of Oprah signin' off. By the time I got there, only 1 inspi(RED) shirt remained - and I wasn't shy about grabing it. It is awe inspiring to see so much positive reaction to something that can potentialy have a HUGE impact. I only wish I could have been a part of this wonderfuly creative endeavour. By the way, I would like to get a template for my blogger page. Will that happen soon?
Congratulations on the US launch!
Red is the color of our life force - and working together we can make a difference to empower the health and welfare of our global citizens!
Let's make it so and create [Red] Services to connect the micro economies throught the web - every dollar we can donate from our efforts will help.
I have E-mailed a proposal to Mr. Shriver and am excited to get started.
Best Wishes,
Ron Festine

Wow, what an incredibly positive campaign. It really says a lot when Bono, Oprah and so many other public figures can set in motion market forces for human upliftment.
Hi Colette,
What an amazing and deeply personal post - I felt honored being able to read your words!
Yes, the launch of RED in the U.S. was awesome and overwhelming. It is the cumulation of all of our actions and desires for quite some time.
I have yet to see Oprah's show. I had to work that day and couldn't tape it at home. A friend of mine from out of town taped it for me so I'll be able to see it in about a week.
No problem - I know that I'll feel as proud and as positive about the launch of RED when I finally see the program as I do right now.
I did go to a Gap store Friday night and bought an olive Desi(red) tee and a red Inspi(red) tee!
Just like my two EDUN ONE tees, they are made of the softest cotton and so comfortable to wear.
Take very good care, Colette. Blessings surround you always.
Inspi(red) and Empowe(red), debbie
Hopefully RED will be coming to us smaller towns here in the midwest. There's so much RED I want to buy, but none anywhere in sight. :( I will be patient. Come to small town Ohio. I want EVERYTHING RED! :)
Being stuck in the midwest of America and being a busy working mom I haven't had the time or the know-how to put my marching boots on. Now I can!!! I have posted on my blog about it to spread the word. I am also going to get the RED Razor phone. I was also thinking how much would be collected if some car companies got in on the RED thing. Could you imagine how quickly large amounts of money would be donated from someone buying a RED car???? Just my thinking for you. I AM PROUD TO BE A PART THIS!!!
love Amanda
(RED) is a great way to make brands kinder.

Hey. As Arden said, I am glad to see the (RED) be launched in the US. I won't lie, though, I haven't been keeping my eyes on P(R) very long, but we've boughten some things, such as sunglasses, from them. I'll be sure to get an INSPI(RED) shirt sometime as soon as possible.
I put an ad and link on my blog. You (or anyone) can check it out if you'd like.

I am amazed and inspired by what this (soon to be I am sure) (RED) movement is going to do for the world! We will never see the far-reaching reprecussions for this campaign as there will be changes created by people who would not have lived, or who would not have ever been born, had it not been for the saving medicines available because of(RED).
My best friend designs and manufactures little girls dance/skate/dress clothing. She would like to make her red velvet dress a (RED)item...How can she do this? It may not be an GAP or Apple product, but every little bit helps and she would love to do what she can! She is Kim Roberts of www.girlflower.com . Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks, Leigh
Nice ad campaign launch with Gap and good to see that half the Gap RED product sales profits will go to help the cause.
With such cleverness and sophistication and a good way to make a difference, was glad to cover it on MotherPie's blog, BO(RED)? Not. Gap Goes RED.
Good luck, looks like you're off to a great start. The world needs mothering beyond our own spaces and you have stomped an easy participation path.
You guys did an awesome job in the launching. Up here in Seattle by Sunday no T's were left. I was sad because I hadn't gotten mine yet, but at the smae time I am so
inspi(RED)!!!
Way to go...
I am so excited and inspi(red) by (RED). I applaude everyone who is working to make a better future for the folks abroad! :-)
You should hit up Nokia about (RED) so we have a more environmentally responsible option for the phone as well. Nokia is trying hard to make the (GREEN) phone - something that is responsible and should be supported, IMO.
Aside from that, very cool initiative.
Good campaign but I must be the only person with questions.
This will help women and children, what about the men?
What is the percentage of money raised that will be used to pay the operating expenses? (I just have a problem with high salaries being paid to the top dogs).
Undrinkable water kills many in Africa, why not help with this too?
I've never been more happy to have had a bad cold - the reason why I wasn't in class and didn't miss Friday's Oprah! It was amazing to see this idea take effect and read this blog and comments about how well the campaign is working!
Everyone wants this stuff already and to have them RED just a great way to show support. I went out this weekend to GAP and got my t-shirts. I'm hoping for a red Razr too!
Keep up your encouraging work guys.
I love what the (RED) campaign is doing. This is an issue that is difficult to talk about, but this campaign is working to both make change and fundraise in a way that removes the stigma. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work!
Personally I'd love it if apple took the the campaign a step further and made a red macbook. I'd buy one in a second!
Great idea!
Unfortunately, people have been conditioned to only think in commercial terms, so this campaign might harness the narrow frame of reference people have for some good.
It will be interesting to see where the products were manufactured, because while their purchase might be helping poverty/AIDS in Africa the products might be contributing to poverty in Asia. Is this campaign a way of borrowing from Paul (a poor child worker in China) to pay Peter (a small child with AIDS in Africa).
I truly hope this is not the case.
All the best in trying something different.
I also watched Oprah with a group of friends who admire U2 and Bono and all of the hard work that the (RED) team has put into such an innovative way to combat disease and poverty in Africa. We were all touched by what we saw on the show and were eager to do our little part to help Africa through our purchasing power. I bought an INSPI(RED) T-shirt and a black/red leather bracelet on Friday and was very happy about my new (RED) gear. I returned on Monday to buy some pins for friends and ended up buying myself the long sleeved blue striped shirt. I look forward to the replenishment of stock, since I really would like to buy some (RED) GAP clothes for Christmas gifts, but they're out of the sizes I need. And a special commendation to the GAP employees who were really enthusiastic about (RED) both times I went to the store. They really help make the whole purchasing experience such a positive one. :) Kudos to all of the work of the (RED) team, and I look forward to supporting your efforts by buying more (RED). :D
Reading about RED has brought me to tears several times. Watching Oprah was one of the most significant events i have ever seen. What an amazing thing this is turning out to be, i would love to be more involved in anyway that i can, if you are ever in need of volunteers from San Diego please contact me. I bought my GAP shirt last friday as soon as i could and i can't wait to get it in the mail :)
Thank you for creating something so amazing.
Hot running water, electricity on demand and flushing toilets! The benefits and comforts enjoyed by us in the developed world.
I hope sincerely hope that RED will contribute to building the infrustructure that is so lacking in parts of Africa.
I've attached a few snippets about our recent sponsorship trip to Rwanda and Uganda.
